Maine Maritime Academy has announced that offensive coordinator Nick Sheehan has been selected as the Mariners' head football coach.

Sheehan is the third person to hold the position in the past two months. Calvin Powell started the season as the head coach, as Maine Maritime played a second sub-varsity season in preparation for returning to varsity action in 2025. He and assistant coach Dan McKenna resigned midseason and former coach and New England football veteran Bill Mottola took over for the final games of the season. Finally, Mottola was promoted to athletic director and Sheehan was promoted to head coach.

Maine Maritime announced in January 2023 that it was bringing football back, which had been absent at the institution since the 2019 season ended.

The announcements were made by Maine Maritime interim president Craig Johnson. "Coach Nick Sheehan has earned the respect of our players and fellow coaches, and together with the current staff will usher Mariners Football into their first varsity season next fall. We couldn't be more pleased with these selections."

Sheehan brings 12 years of college coaching experience to his first head coaching role. Most recently, he had oversight of the Mariners' offense. Since the return of the MMA program in 2023, he has assisted in all phases of operations including recruiting, retention, and practice and game planning. He was responsible for coaching and developing the quarterbacks and wide receivers.

"I am incredibly honored and excited to be named the head football coach at Maine Maritime Academy. This is a program with a rich history, and I am eager to continue building on that tradition," Sheehan added. "I want to express my deep gratitude to the administration, and everyone involved in the process for believing in me and giving me this opportunity."

Maine Maritime played three contests against varsity opponents this fall and went 0-3. The Mariners will carry a 22-game or 25-game losing streak into the fall, depending on how one counts the three games from 2024. MMA will compete in the Commonwealth Coast Conference.
