Mike Clark won two games in 2003 on the final play of the game. Augustana athletics file photo |
It's a good thing Mike Clark had all that range. The junior, who went on to be the first team D3football.com All-American at kicker, didn't have much time to work with.
With 29 seconds left in the teams' Sept. 27, 2003 game at Augustana, UW-Platteville took a 26-24 lead on a 30-yard field goal by Jason Borchardt.
Quarterback Brad Wendell hit Kyle Zick with a 10-yard pass to the 43 and then completed one to Anton Steinhart for 5 to the Vikings 48. After an incompletion, Augustana caught a break when Platteville was called for interference on a third-and-5 pass play.
With just two seconds on the clock Clark came on and nailed his game winner, from 54 yards. It was the longest game-winning field goal in Division III football history, beating the 52-yard kick from Fitchburg State's Treavor Smith just one week earlier.
