SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 29, 2016) – Despite building an early 17-0 lead, the Sewanee football team could not hold off a record-setting performance by Chicago quarterback Blake Moser, as the visiting Maroons rallied for a 49-30 win, Saturday, at historic Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.
Moser set a new Southern Athletic Association (SAA) record for passing yards by going 26-for-42 for 558 yards. He also tied the SAA record for single-game touchdown passes with seven. Overall, Moser tossed five scores that were over 46 yards.
Early on, Sewanee had all the momentum. After the Tigers forced a quick three and out by Chicago, the Tigers marched 64 yards in 10 plays for their first score. On third and 13, quarterback Sam Hearn found Allan Puri for a 23-yard touchdown pass.
Two drives later, Sewanee scored again when Michael Jacobs booted a 36-yard field goal. After Chicago received the ensuing kickoff, Lee Menefee picked off Moser and raced 12 yards for the pick six with 10:39 left in the first half.
Unfortunately, Moser answered back three plays later with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Trevor Anderson. From there, Moser found running back Chandler Carroll for a 10-yard score.
Leading by three to start the third quarter, Sewanee received another big play on defense. With Chicago driving, junior John Cleveland intercepted Moser at the Sewanee 12 and raced 88 yards into the end zone. Unfortunately, the touchdown was called back due to an illegal block by the Tigers. Nevertheless, Sewanee kept the ball and started its drive at the Chicago 34. Eight plays later, Hearn found his older brother Steven Hearn on a corner fade route, which pushed the Tigers ahead 24-21.
Like he did after his first INT, Moser responded. Back-to-back touchdown passes, one for 66 yards and one for 60 yards, pushed the Maroons in front 28-24.
After Sewanee was held to a three and out, Chicago extended its advantage when Jamie Rieger caught a 29-yard touchdown pass.
Down two scores, Sewanee kept fighting. Running back Mikey Plancher broke four tackles as he raced for a 23-yard touchdown run with 10:26 left to play.
Unfortunately, Chicago scored on two long touchdown passes late in the fourth quarter which sealed the victory.
Despite the loss, Sewanee dominated statistically. The Tigers finished with a season-high 393 total yards. Sewanee also held a 45:43 to 14:17 advantage in time of possession.
Individually, Hearn gutted out a career-high 235 total yards and two touchdowns. Plancher added 91 rushing yards and a score while Steven Hearn added 10 catches for 96 receiving yards.
On defense, Chicago linebacker Jackson Garrey led all players with 14 tackles. B.J. Addison and Montana Willis led Sewanee with four stops apiece. Addison also added a sack and 1.5 tackles for a loss.
Sewanee will play its final home game of the 2016 season with a 1:30 Homecoming contest against Millsaps, next Saturday.
