The Lake Forest College football team traveled to the University of Chicago on Saturday and left with a 28-9 victory and a perfect regular season.
Set up by a 54-yard return by freshman Cam Hackworth on the opening kickoff, the Foresters reached the end zone on their opening drive and led the rest of the way. The first touchdown was a 15-yard completion on 4th-and-12 from senior quarterback Joshua Gasca to senior wide receiver Tee Land.
After a Chicago field goal made the score 7-3, the visitors pulled away with a pair of rushing touchdowns by sophomore running back Taylen Goodwin in the second quarter. He crossed the goal line from six and nine yards out and was Lake Forest's leading rusher on the day with 47 yards on 11 carries.
The Foresters led 21-3 at halftime and, after a scoreless third quarter, the Maroon scored their only touchdown of the day with 12 minutes to play. They also tried to steal a point by lining up to kick the extra point but running a fake, but the Lake Forest defense was not fooled and the pass was incomplete.
The final touchdown of the game was a 1-yard plunge into the end zone by Forester senior tailback Josiah Kidd. Land out-jumped the Chicago defensive back and pushed his way forward for gain of 44 yards on the previous play. Land was the game's leading receiver with four catches for a season-high 106 yards. Gasca was 10-for-16 for 183 yards and no turnovers on the day.
The Forester defense was stingy throughout the contest and allowed the Maroons to gain just 163 total yards and only 2.8 per play.
Sophomore linebacker Jackson Sander led the visitors with seven tackles while senior linebacker Nik Rieck had six, including a 10-yard sack and an additional tackle for loss. Senior defensive lineman Donnevan Plummer added two sacks and sophomore Preston Mosher one and Lake Forest finished with 10 tackles for loss for a total of 53 yards in the game.
The Foresters are now 10-0 overall and 9-0 in Midwest Conference play this fall. Chicago finished the season 6-4 overall and 6-3 in the league.
Lake Forest's next game will be announced during the NCAA Division III Tournament Selection Show, which will be available on NCAA.com Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
